What is Blogging and Why Should Every Business Do It?
When most people think of blogging, they think of personal, online journals kept by various internet users. While blogging can be a useful way for individuals to keep their friends and family up to date on their personal lives, a different kind of blogging β business blogging βis becoming more and more popular. Business blogging is, as the name implies, a blog or "journal" of sorts that is posted on a business or company website. Professional blogs commonly discuss or address upcoming events, past events, customer questions and concerns, information about the business that has recently been in the media, press releases, special discounts and offers, and if applicable new store openings or locations. Business blogging allows companies to keep their clients informed and also provides a more "personal" feeling relationship with these clients. Customers who read business blogs feel more connected to the company and tend to regard it as more trustworthy and reliable. This, of course, is one of the best things a business can do to attract new clients and to strengthen the bonds with existing customers.
Blogging is simply the newest form of effective business communicating, and most of the big companies have jumped on the bandwagon. Blogs are very easily searchable, and research shows that site visitors are more likely to read information presented in a personally written "blog" format than they are to read data presented in a more straightforward, informative way.
Also, blogging can be a great form of advertising in itself. When the company writes the blog content, it has the power to promote various features or products that either are not getting adequate exposure or that have declined in popularity. Blogging is, quite simply, one of the easiest ways to sell products or services and to attract a younger, less inpatient and more demanding demographic.
Whether a company hires someone from the inside or an outside freelance writer to compose the blog content, there are some important factors to keep in mind. One thing to keep in mind is that content should always be personable and easy to read. A good blog will read as if the writer is speaking directly to the reader. Additionally, the use of "big" or intimidating words should be avoided at all costs. Using these types of terms will draw the reader out of the "friendly" world of the blog and will remind the individual that he or she is reading something of a business nature. Pictures and graphics, providing they are easily loaded and relate to the content, are also good ways to attract attention to the blog and to make them more enjoyable to read. For some companies, blogging can feel like an uncomfortable or dangerous step to take. In fact, however, it is just the opposite. Blogging is what is popular and acceptable in this day and time, and those who are not willing to take steps forward into the future will soon find that they have been left behind while the more up to date companies are taking the lead.
