Basics of Branding Yourself / Your Website

Whether you are interested in branding yourself, your website, or your company, you will need to know the basics of the process in order to experience success with branding. Before going into how it's done, however, it is important that you have a clear understanding of what branding actually is and what it is used for.

Branding yourself or your website means to establish the site or yourself as a leader or an expert in a particular field. If you're branding yourself, your name and your knowledge (and sometimes even your face) will be attached to everything you do. Some people accomplish this through article marketing, basically writing a lot of informative articles on one specific topic and submitting and publishing them to as many popular outlets as possible. Others benefit from the use of social networking sites, such as Myspace and Facebook. Still others use video marketing, often posting informative videos on popular video sharing websites such as Youtube. The same strategies are also used in order to brand a website. Site owners will market their site in all the same ways and will build it up to be an expert in the field in which it deals.

Branding is a great way to get your name or your site name out and about for everybody to see. It is also one of the easiest ways to take an unknown site and make it one of the top sites. Of course, however, there are some downsides to branding that you should be aware of. If you become associated with a particular field of expertise, it can be very hard to transition into doing other things. You will also experience difficulties if you wish, at any point, to sell your website. This is because your site will be heavily associated with you and will probably not function as well or be as recognizable without your involvement.

For these reasons, it is best to brand yourself or your website only when you are sure that the field you are working to establish yourself in is one that you plan on sticking with for a very long time. You should think carefully before putting your name or your face on anything that is not widely accepted or that may be somewhat taboo. For some people, poor branding choices can lead to a lifetime of regrets and a very poor reputation in the business world. You must also be prepared for the sudden increase in popularity that you or your site will undoubtedly experience. For this reason, it is best to have a fully outlined marketing or business plan that you do not deviate from.

The decision to brand yourself or your website is not one that should ever be entered into lightly. You should only do this when you are ready to deal with the changes that will come from it and when you know that you have found your field and are planning to make a career out of it.
